We thought we’d share something a little different that we’ve been up to. A few weeks ago I got a phone call from my nephew Noah, who is 7. He had been watching Nailed It! on Netflix, and asked if we could have a sleepover and do a Nailed It! cake.
If you’ve never seen Nailed It! you should definitely give it a go, it’s super good fun and Nicole Byer is a delight. The premise of the show is amateur bakers are challenged to complete an elaborate baking challenge and compete for prize money. Noah decided he could totally “nail” making the volcano cake from the show which looked like this…
And which actually erupts! You gotta hand it to kids, believing anything is possible.
Noah and I made a bit of a plan of how to construct the cake beforehand. All in all it took 4 cakes to get the height we wanted, a whole heap of buttercream to stick it together, and a cup right there in the middle to hold the lava mixture.
The recipe for the lava eruption is below, it’s totally safe and edible of course as well. On the show they use dry ice for the eruption, but I was a bit wary of letting the 7 year old play with that, so did a bit of research and found a recipe online which uses jelly instead. Lastly, we covered the cake in melted chocolate to protect it better from being sodden from the eruption, and then Noah decorated with dinosaurs. We were ready to go!
NAILED IT!
Lava Recipe
Make up 1 packet of jelly to packet directions, except substitute some boiling water for cold water so your mixture is warm but not too hot. I used Airplane brand glitter jelly because its vegetarian. Half fill your cup with the jelly mixture, top with lemon juice to fill the cup almost to the brim. Stir in a large spoonful of baking soda and stir.
YUM!
